作为一个中国人看到外网有人评价中国版steam还是非常诧异的。事实上完美世界的蒸汽平台并没有被广大玩家所接受，反而还遭到了排斥，且原版steam在中国没有被ban。个人认为蒸汽平台本质的目的是为了让这个东西合法化，应为虚拟交易没有任何税务，所以如果放任steam不管对中国gdp会有一定的影响

I do want to point out... China isn't the only nation that's censored government criticism. The US actually had an official policy (backed by congressionally passed law, executive orders, and obscure interpretations of copyright law that is now unconstitutional) that representing the US military and US postal workers in a negative light wasn't allowed. They got away with it for DECADES by leveraging uniform laws. I believe Seinfeld was the first American media that was allowed to portray the US postal service in a negative light, and that was only after a lawsuit that went all the way to the supreme court, where they eventually ruled that portrayal of uniforms in media was essential to criticism of the state, and that criticism was constitutionally protected. However, until the supreme court ruling, we literally couldn't do it legally. As a western nation. Until the 90s. This is ignoring everything that happened with McCarthyism and blacklists. China is definitely in the wrong. But we did many of the same things from a different political angle until only a few years ago.

Because new law in China requires Chinese citizens to be registered to play games... in part of the restrictions of playtime and open hours... So while Steam would not be illegal, using an international version of steam would be illegal for a Chinese citizen. Also, many people in other countries also use simplified Chinese so I'd say around 10~12% of current steam is Chinese. If they keep on using the international version of Steam they would be charged with multiple criminal charges.

As a Chinese live in China, talking something about policies and government in China is forbidden,(even in private situation, such as in the personal chat group that only contains less than 20 people, I know it because my account has been banned for it.every words you post on the internet are being checked, and if there is any word that be defined as ‘improper', your post will disappear in 1min.), although in the 21th century, I think most of the people in China should realize this is unreasonable and even against it, but the reality is, most of them just took it, and say nothing. ‘Yeah, China is imperfect, but there is much more positive things’, people say. Anyway, I think free speech is important, and as a Chinese(I was born in Beijing and lived in China for over 16yrs. I’ve got my foreign identity so I am going to leave this trash country soon), I can guarantee that there is some serious problems of free speech and other sides in China and in my opinion China should die ASAP.

I strongly disagree with Valves's approach: creating a chinese communist party approved version of steam (which is the same as a censored and government supervised version) is just supporting censorship in order to get money from the chinese market. that is an american company doing political censorship to support a criminal regime. Bottom line is, as Linus said, Valve has no guarantee that it's chinese version of steam won't be banned in the future.

American companies do the same thing here -- it's just that you're ok with it because they belong to a different political party. There's nothing worse than being lectured about censorship from someone on the left, the people that created cancel culture and push "hate speech" legislation. Who defines what hate is? Only people with absolute power: authoritarians. Cancel culture is a grass roots authoritarian movement, as hilarious as that is to say and you're treading in extremely dangerous waters once the government realizes that a large percentage of people are OK with that type of legislation.
